Seafloor & Habitat Maps
Take a look under the water's surface...
We're in the process of publishing several different maps that reveal the underwater geography of the San Juan Islands and the Salish Sea.
The first set are up. These are Google Earth files that allow you to "fly" to any location in the San Juan Islands and explore images of the underwater terrain.
With Google Earth you can change your viewing angle, too. So you can look at things from straight up, but you can also tilt the map and look at everything from ground level, or anyplace in between. (Navigation hints are on the download page.)
Get a sense of how it works by watching our "flythrough" movie that takes you from Friday Harbor to Eastsound. It was made with Google Earth (but it's much smaller and more grainy than the real thing).
Or just jump right to our Google Earth overlays showing seafloor geography. Complete instructions for downloading the files are on that page. They're big, so you'll want to make sure you're on a fast internet connection.
