The SeaDoc Society’s new Translational Scientist and Field Veterinarian will play a lead role in moving the dial forward to protect the long-term health of the Salish Sea. This role is an exciting opportunity to join SeaDoc’s 25-year history of conservation work and make a mark on a better future of this place we love. This is a new role for our organization, and will play a key role in translating years of trusted science into action for this ecosystem and its wildlife.
They will not have to chase after grants or worry whether there will be funding for their position from year to year. That’s because this role will have guaranteed annual funding from the SeaDoc Society Community Endowment for Science Translation, and we’re working with donors now to raise enough funds to secure the future of this role.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Science Director, SeaDoc Society, UC Davis, this position provides leadership in organizing, funding, and conducting research associated with the health of the Salish Sea Ecosystem. The veterinary scientist will develop and execute a plan of engagement with decision makers to get science into their hands. This includes, but is not limited to US and Canadian State, Provincial, and Federal elected officials, Washington Fish & Wildlife Commission, and other natural resource decision making agencies.
They will serve as an ambassador for the program and be actively engaged to build donor and sponsorship base of the organization.
As needed, this scientist will assist with teaching and public service activities as part of the One Health Institute (OHI) and UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM).

Under the direction of the SeaDoc Society Science Director, conduct and help translate scientific information to improve conservation of the Salish Sea. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Help prioritize research and science translation needs for conservation
Conduct cutting-edge research on topics related to the health of the Salish Sea ecosystem and its wildlife and publish findings in peer-reviewed manuscripts
Provide veterinary support for regional wildlife health and conservation efforts, including wildlife disease outbreak investigation, anesthesia, and surgery
Stay current on new scientific findings on ecosystem recovery and species recovery.
Job will be hybrid remote with base on Orcas Island, San Juan County, Washington.
Management/Policy/Outreach - 50%
Under the direction of the SeaDoc Society Science Director:
Develop and execute a plan of engagement with Decision Makers to get science into their hands (includes, but not limited to State elected officials, Washington Fish & Wildlife Commission, and other natural resource decision making agencies)
As needed, produce 1-page policy briefs on important topics
Plan and participate in field trips or site visits to educate decision makes on timely topics
Play active role in the Puget Sound Partnership’s work (Science Panel, Action Agenda Updates, Puget Sound Ecosystem Monitoring Program monitoring groups, etc.) to improve the health of the Salish Sea.
Solicit input from and actively work with regional Tribes and First Nations on common ecosystem health issues
Serve on State and Federal Ad-Hoc and long-term regional committees working on Salish Sea Conservation through agencies like Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Meet with State and Federal elected officials requesting scientific support for creation of policy and as requested, testify at hearings and other policy-related efforts
Collaborate and deliver scientific advice to regional US and Canadian organizations working on natural resource conservation by participating in ad-hoc working groups or advisory panels, providing public comment or testimony, reviewing planning or recovery documents, etc.
Produce and deliver public-facing scientific lectures and presentations as requested and appropriate for the SeaDoc mission, including providing information solicited by the local community
Assist SeaDoc Communications Team by identifying and providing stories, along with photos and video, to be used to engage donors and supporters on our website, blog, newsletter, social media, print products and more.
Fundraising/Grant Writing - 10%
Act as an Ambassador and actively engaged to build donor and sponsorship base of the organization
Identify and pursue grants to support field data collection, sample testing, data analysis and the writing and publication of peer-reviewed scientific papers
Provide content and assist with creating impact reports for granting organizations and for individual supporters
Assist SeaDoc Regional Director with identification, solicitation, and stewardship of private supporters
Participate in SeaDoc Society Fundraising efforts
